We went from wildfires to storms and flooding.  This can make it challenging for me to get my evening walks in with the dog. Although, she doesn’t seem to mind it as much as I do when she tracks mud all over the house. There are presently dirty towels all over the entryway.

I often lament that it’s hard to combine my non-work activities and hobbies. I need to work out. I need to read (both for refilling the creative well and for sheer pleasure). I need to see my friends. I need to spend time with my family.  Long story short, I don’t watch tv. I’d love to watch tv but something had to go. I also started doing audiobooks or podcasts during my long walks with the pup. That let me do two things at once.

With the weather being so cold and wet out, I started using a portable cycle.

My latest brainchild was the realization I could listen to an audiobook while riding on my DeskCycle.  What’s a DeskCycle? It’s the ultimate for lazy people who need to work out (ie, too lazy to drive to the gym), and for people who have to sit.

My friend Christina loved hers so much that when she noticed her husband kept taking it and moving it, they ended up getting him one too! That was back in 2014. They are still going strong. I foolishly bought a less expensive model, which ended up being rickety and squeaky within a few months. However, it was definitely a proof of concept for me in that I used it a lot and so did my older son.  That led me to finally cave and buy the nicer magnet based DeskCycle. I’m so glad I did.  It lets me just zone out to an audiobook while I peddle away on this portable cycler. It was a little tricky finding a chair that was the right height for my legs, but otherwise, it’s easy.

I’m listening to Lines of Departure, Book 2 of the Frontlines series by Marko Kloos narrated by the fantastic Luke Daniels.

I originally read Book 1 on my Kindle but time is in short supply so I quickly switched over to the audiobook format so that I could also use whispersync. Also, the price can’t be beat right now. Luke Daniels narrates a tremendous range of books from Military SciFi like this Frontlines series and The Ember Wars (which is an amazing value at 2 books in the audiobook!) to romance novels. He does a great job with accents.

So if you’re finding that maybe you aren’t working out because you’d rather be watching a show or reading, I’m just going to suggest that maybe you can have it all by combining the two!
