This is part 3 of my Nebula binge reading updates. I finished Richard Fox’s Going Dark. This is a short story with heart. Underneath all the fast-paced action of dodging enemy fire lies a story of loyalty and devotion that move you, gentle reader. It is set in the Ember War world so if you’re a fan of audiobooks, I would suggest you pick up the lively first entry (and 2nd!) in the series narrated by the incomparable Luke Daniels.

I also finished the unexpectedly compelling futuristic sleuth novella, The Tea Master and the Detective. The protagonist is the shipmind The Shadows Child, but embodied in a physical form as an impoverished human. In this future, humans can travel to space, but need a special tea brewed for them to survive the journey.

A “detective” hires The Shadows Child to find something and instead, they find a fresh corpse. This kicks off the mystery and the hunt for the killer is on. An enjoyable and unexpected read.

I will am looking forward to reading more from the author, Aliette de Bodard, and have picked up my copy of In The Vanisher’s Palace.

My favorite line from the classic Dune by Frank Herbert is “Fear is the Mind Killer.” When I read this next Nebula nominated entry, “And Yet” by A.T. Greenblatt, I couldn’t help but think of that line. The protagonist is visiting a haunted house and reliving his childhood trauma there over and over again with varying outcomes. Strangely, there is a happy ending of sorts. Enjoy this piece here for free on Uncanny.
