Ah, summer. It’s time to hit the beach and grab a good book, right?
Well, it used to be like that before I had kids. Now it’s more like, “what sports camp are they at this week and do I have to make their lunches?” However, the summer nights are still great for reading and escaping to a far off adventure.
I give you these excellent reads that totally transported me. The good news is that if you really enjoy them then you are in for a treat because they are all introductions to a series so you can blast through the others all summer long.
- Gemini Cell: A Shadow Ops Novel by Myke Cole (2015-01-27) (
- Syndicate Wars: First Strike (Seppukarian Book 1)
- Old Man’s War
- Iron Dragoons (Terran Armor Corps) (Volume 1)
I listened to a great podcast interview with Mark Edwards on the Bestseller Experiment and he said that for his first several books he was able to summarize his books with three words. So here’s my attempt to do that:
Gemini Cell by Myke Cole – ZOMBIE NAVY SEAL
Syndicate Wars – MARINES BATTLE ALIENS
Old Man’s War – SEPTUAGENARIAN REJUVENATED SOLDIER
Iron Dragoons – MECH BASIC TRAINING
Ok, so I’m terrible at the 3-word summary. Despite that, I think you can get a flavor from these to decide if you want to throw them on the Kindle or toss the books into your beach bag. Don’t forget the libations.
An interesting list, thanks for the recommendations!
I feel like this list will just keep growing. I finished Iron Dragoons this morning and left a Goodreads and Amazon review, which I don’t do as often as I should. So that went right on the list too!
Thanks, the authors appreciate it I’m sure!
Interesting stuff. I’ve read Scalzi, I’ll have to check out the rest.
Space Pirate Captain, ie Captain Drake of Starship Blackbeard fame, with a little sniper exp thrown in….
