You know how some bakeries give you that bonus donut if you buy a dozen? There’s actually a word for it–lagniappe. That’s what I feel like I’m getting when I read a short story set in a universe I already know and enjoy.
So when I got that email from Nick Webb saying there was a blast of Kindle Worlds novellas from his world coming out last week, I was pretty interested. Then I saw that Richard Fox (yes, that Richard Fox) had written one and I was like, “Shut up and take my money!”
Legacy Fleet: Cold Call (Kindle Worlds Novella) This space diversion takes place between the 2nd and 3rd installment of Nick Webb’s Constitution series (Warrior: Book 2 of The Legacy Fleet Trilogy (Volume 2) and Victory: Book 3 of The Legacy Fleet Trilogy (Volume 3).
Soldiers led by Major Cole track down an abandoned world that may hold ancient tech to repel the alien invaders, the Swarm. Earth is counting on them. Only one problem, the Russians are there first and it’s a race to the finish to see who can track down the ancient tech.
Fast-paced, with a satisfying yet inevitable conclusion, Cold Call is a tightly plotted novella. Full disclosure: I have not read Book 2 and 3 of the Legacy Fleet trilogy but I didn’t need to. This story did not require anything more than what I knew about the world from Book 1 Constitution.
So when you finish a space opera and are deciding on whether tackle a new space marine novel or an alien invasion classic, have a quick treat and enjoy Richard Fox’s fun Cold Call.
Oh my goodness, I loved his EMBER WARS so when I saw he had a short story out I had to buy it. Its on my TBR as well!
JR – it’s a quick read. Totally fun! I have only read book 1 of Ember Wars and book 1 of Legacy Fleet but that was enough to enjoy this little novella. It’s probably only 10k words. I read it in a night.
I’ll check it out! 🙂
